PM National Nutrition Mission (NNM) for Children & Pregnant Women – Details

The central government has launched the National Nutrition Mission (NNM) to address issues of under-nutrition, anemia, low birth weight, and stunting. The mission aims to provide ration to children (between 6 months and 3 years), pregnant women, and lactating mothers (up to six months after birth) at their homes. It is estimated that the NNM scheme will benefit around 10 crore people across the country. On 8th March 2018, PM Narendra Modi launched the Rashtriya Poshan Mission / Kuposhan Mukt Bharat Scheme from Rajasthan.

The objectives of the National Nutrition Mission include improved monitoring, supervision, target setting, issuing alerts for timely action, and providing guidance on nutrition-related interventions across ministries. The scheme aims to reduce the rate of under-nutrition and low birth weight by 2% annually. Additionally, all children between the ages of 3 and 6 years will receive hot-cooked meals. PM Modi has also launched the Pan India Expansion of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme. It is mandatory to have an Aadhaar Card to avail the benefits of this Suposhan scheme.

National Nutrition Mission Objectives

The National Nutrition Mission (NNM), also known as the Kuposhan Mukt Bharat Scheme, has several objectives and essential features, which are as follows:

  • Providing necessary and adequate nutrition to women, adolescent girls, and young children (0-6 years of age).
  • Mapping all related schemes that contribute to addressing malnutrition.
  • Establishing a strong convergence mechanism to tackle under-nutrition, low birth weight, anemia, and stunting.
  • Conducting social audits to ensure proper implementation of the scheme.
  • Providing Rs. 500 to all Anganwadi workers (AWWs) to ensure enrollment through Aadhaar.
  • Setting up an ICT-based real-time monitoring system to reduce the workload of AWWs and eliminate the need for manual registers.
  • Promoting the use of latest technologies, such as smartphones, among workers.
  • Establishing Nutrition Resource Centers (NRCs) and emphasizing mass involvement through Jan Andolan (people’s movement).

National Nutrition Mission – Major Impact Areas

The Rashtriya Poshan Mission aims to focus on reducing the levels of stunting, undernutrition, anemia, and low birth weight babies. The major impact areas of the mission are as follows:

  • Reduction in undernutrition and low birth weight: The primary objective of the National Nutrition Mission is to reduce the rate of undernutrition and low birth weight by 2% annually.
  • Reduction in stunting: The mission aims to achieve a substantial reduction in the prevalence of stunting from the current rate of 38.4% (as per the National Family Health Survey 4 Report) to 25% by FY 2023.
  • Reduction in anemia: The Rashtriya Poshan Mission also focuses on reducing the rate of anemia among young children, women, and adolescent girls. The goal is to achieve a reduction of at least 3% in the anemia rate every year.

By targeting these impact areas, the mission aims to improve the nutritional status of the population, especially children, women, and adolescent girls, and address the key issues of stunting, undernutrition, anemia, and low birth weight.

National Nutrition Mission – Benefits, Budget & Coverage

The National Nutrition Health Mission aims to benefit approximately 10 crore (100 million) people. To achieve this, the central government will provide incentives to the states and union territories (UTs) to meet their targets in implementing the mission.

The Rashtriya Poshan Mission scheme will be implemented in phases, involving various states. This phased approach ensures a systematic and effective rollout of the mission across different regions of the country, allowing for better coordination and implementation at the state level. By including multiple states in different phases, the mission aims to cover a wide geographical area and reach a significant population to address the nutrition-related challenges.
