What is WB Krishak Bandhu Natun Scheme
The WB Krishak Bandhu Natun Scheme is a relaunched version of the kishore bondhu Scheme in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on June 17, 2021, that the state government would be doubling the annual financial support provided to farmers and sharecroppers.
Under the Krishak Bandhu Natun Scheme, farmers who own one acre or more of cultivable land will now receive increased financial support of Rs. 10,000 per annum, up from the previous amount of Rs. 5,000. Additionally, farmers with less than one acre of cultivable land will receive a minimum of Rs. 4,000 per annum on a pro-rata basis.
The government of West Bengal is committed to fulfilling all the promises made in its 10 Ongikars (pledges), and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured the people that the government is working tirelessly to deliver on those promises.
About Krishak Bandhu Scheme 2.0
The Krishak Bandhu Scheme 2.0 was included in the poll manifesto of the Trinamool Congress and aims to benefit over 62 lakh farmers in the state of West Bengal. On June 17, 2021, a total of 9.78 lakh farmers received Rs. 290 crore through the Direct Benefit Transfer system. The state government has also provided death benefits to 28,000 farmers, with their families eligible to receive Rs. 2 lakh if the farmer passed away before reaching 60 years of age.
Under the new plan, farmers who own 1 acre or more of land will receive an increased annual assistance of Rs. 10,000, as opposed to the previous amount of Rs. 5,000. Krishak Bandhu 2.0 Better than PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana
The Krishak Bandhu Scheme provides farmers with greater benefits compared to the PM Kisan scheme, a central government initiative where farmers receive an annual funding of Rs. 6,000 in three equal installments. However, not all farmers are included in the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. In contrast, the Krishak Bandhu Scheme 2.0 includes all farmers and sharecroppers, offering increased assistance of Rs. 10,000 for those with 1 acre or more of cultivable land, and Rs. 4,000 for farmers with less than 1 acre of cultivable land. The Bengal government introduced the Krishak Bandhu scheme in 2018, and as of February 2021, around Rs. 1,500 crore has been disbursed to farmers.
Additionally, there is a death benefit scheme under kishore bondhu where a farmer’s family receives a sum of Rs. 2 lakh if the farmer passes away before reaching 60 years of age. On May 14, CM Mamata Banerjee wrote an open letter to farmers, criticizing the central government for delaying the implementation of the “PM Kisan” scheme while simultaneously releasing the first installment of funds to 7 lakh farmers in Bengal. The CM stated that extending the benefits of the scheme to eligible farmers in Bengal was a result of her government’s persistent efforts.
